    WHY DO WE KEEP TALKING ABOUT FATS, OILS, GREASE (FOG)?

     

     

    ANSWER:     Nearly 90% of all sewage overflows nationwide are caused by homeowners who improperly dispose of everyday fats, oils and grease (FOG).  These overflows are not just public health issues, but can result in serious damage to our environment, especially pollution of our streams, rivers and lakes.

     

    Can a kitchen sink be causing problems?

     

     

    If you pour FOG down your drain or garbage disposal, the fats, oils and grease build up over time and constricts the flow of wastewater (similar to cholesterol build up in an artery).  This build up will eventually cause sewers to back up into homes and/or overflow sewage into streams, rivers and lakes.

     

    What does Platte Canyon Water and Sanitation District do about the problem?

      

    Our crews respond quickly to resolve backups and overflows that are located in our sanitary sewer system.  We also have a regular program to inspect and jet clean the sewer main lines to keep them flowing freely.  However, the pipes and devices that connect homes and businesses to our collection system are the responsibility of the individual property owner.  Prevention is the best and wisest solution to protect your sewage plumbing system.  Sewage backups can cost a lot of money for homeowners.  You may want to check with your homeowner’s insurance to make sure sewer backups are covered on your policy.  If you haven’t specifically added it, it may not be covered.

     

    What can you do to prevent problems?

     

    Follow these simple steps: 

    • Minimize the use of excess cooking oils and grease that will need to be disposed of
    • Excess grease should be cooled and poured into a container and placed in the trash.  Consider using empty coffee cans, pet food cans, empty food jars, etc. for disposal.
    • Pots and pans with heavy grease build up should be wiped with a paper towel before being placed in the dishwasher.
