  2. Waterton Canyon closed to recreation on Oct. 8 and 9 as crews continue work on the Strontia Springs Dam maintenance project

Waterton Canyon, which is currently closed during the week for construction work, will also be closed to recreation on Oct. 8 and 9.

As part of a maintenance project at Strontia Springs Dam, there will be heavy construction traffic in the canyon during this time, creating unsafe conditions for recreationists.

Denver Water will determine if an additional weekend closure is necessary for Oct. 15 and 16 by Wednesday, Oct. 12, and will update its Waterton Canyon webpage accordingly.

On Sept. 6, 2016, the canyon closed to recreation Mondays through Fridays through November while crews continued their work to rebuild the High Line Canal diversion structure in the South Platte River. During this closure, crews are also rehabilitating some of the pipes that run across the canyon trail and completing a maintenance project at Strontia Springs Dam.

Hikers and bikers on the Colorado Trail should seek alternative access points, which can be found at, during this time.
