  1. 1/26/2007 2007 XERISCAPE SEMINARS AND SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED
  2. Platte Canyon is once again pleased to sponsor a series of Xeriscape landscaping and irrigation efficiency seminars to help our customers enjoy a beautiful yard without wasting water or money. The series has grown in popularity as customers respond to water restrictions, hot, dry summer weather, and increasing water rates.

According to Alyssa Quinn, program director, “Customers want to save water and money but still want to enjoy colorful gardens and green grass. Feedback from past seminar participants has been very positive. We have found that the majority of customers attending the seminars have implemented irrigation tips and used plant and landscape design guidance to enhance the appearance and water efficiency of their personal landscape.”

This year’s seminars include the ever popular Introduction to Xeriscape which introduces the seven basic principles of Xeriscape. The introduction class will be presented by Denver Water Conservation Department’s David Winger. Mr. Winger is a recognized expert in water efficient landscape design and has published numerous guides, manuals, and journals, some of which will be available for purchase at the seminar, and is also the editor of the popular Xeriscape Maintenance Journal series. All participants at the seminar will receive a free copy of Mr. Winger’s Xeriscape Maintenance Journal Volume IV. The introduction is free and anyone is welcome to attend. A reservation is necessary!

We are very pleased that Larry Keesen is returning to conduct the Keeping Your Lawn Green With Less Water again this year. Mr. Keesen is president of Keesen Water Management, one of the metro area’s leading experts on lawn irrigation efficiency. Mr. Keesen will describe how a few minor adjustments to your irrigation system or your lawn watering habits can result in large dollar savings, especially during this time of rising water rates and drought concerns. This is a free seminar. Please call to make a reservation.

New to the seminar series this year is Xeriscape: HOA Planning & Design. This two-part series is similar to the Introduction to Xeriscape seminar but is specifically designed to address the concerns of Home Owners Associations. The first part of this series will introduce the Seven Steps of Xeriscape and will review the design and maintenance pitfalls of HOA roadside and common areas. This seminar is presented by Larry Horgan of Garden Builders, Inc. This is a free seminar. Please call to make a reservation.

The second part of the series is an HOA One-on One session. HOA representatives will meet with Jill Easley, and a renowned landscape architect who will assist your HOA in introducing Xeriscape into your particular landscape. HOA representatives wishing to attend the HOA One-on-One session must first attend the free Xeriscape: HOA Planning & Design seminar. You pay one-half of the landscape architect’s fee, and the District picks up the rest. Space is limited, a reservation is required.

Also new this year is Tree Selection, Planting and Establishment. This seminar will be conducted by Keith Wood, Assistant Staff Forester in the Community Forestry Division of the Colorado State Forestry Service. Mr. Wood holds a Master’s degree in Forest Biology from Colorado State University and was City Forester for the City of Westminster for 13 years. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Colorado Tree Coalition as well as the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture. Keith is a Certified Arborist and Forester. Tree Selection, Planting and Establishment will discuss the topics of tree selection, how to properly plant different kinds of nursery stock, as well as the initial care required after planting for the successful establishment of the tree. This is a free seminar but reservations are required.
