  1. 11/25/2005 Denver Water Increases Rates
  2. Beginning January 1, 2007 Platte Canyon customers may or may not be paying more for water service.  Why the uncertainty?  Because Denver Water approved some significant changes in the rate structure that will make water bills much more sensitive to the amount of water used.

Generally, customers who use less than 30,000 gallons per bimonthly billing period will pay less than they did in 2006.  The more water consumed over 30,000 gallons, the more you will pay in excess of 2006 bills.

For residential customers Denver Water uses an increasing block rate structure.  Water consumed in each block is charged at a different rate per 1,000 gallons (see rate chart).  In 2006, the rate per 1,000 gallons for water consumed in the fourth rate block (80,000 gallons or more) was twice the price of the first rate block.  In 2007, the fourth rate block is four times as much as the first rate block.

In addition to water consumption charges, Denver Water assesses a fixed service or meter charge.  In 2006, for a typical residential customer this charge is $9.15 per bimonthly bill.  In 2007, the service charge will drop to $5.98 per bimonthly bill.

The new rate structure is clearly designed to encourage water conservation.  Customers who are cautious and efficient in their use of water, particularly outdoor use, will be able to pay the same or less than they currently pay.  Those that consume large amounts of water will experience significant increases in 2007 water bills.  The impact of the new water rates on water bills at varying levels of consumption is shown below.
